Net Positive Hospitality Simulation - For Faculty

image

The hospitality industry can and must accelerate the journey to Net Positive and give back more than it takes.

The Sim Institute’s Net Positive Hospitality Simulation is a cutting-edge experiential learning tool for professionals and students across a wider range of functions and disciplines. It is designed to empower learners with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to help their organizations to make major progress towards Net Positive
Hospitality.

The simulation has been developed by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and Sim Institute.  On this site you will find two options - one for students and this one, for faculty members who want to bring this to their classroom.

For Faculty:

Enhance your existing syllabus:

- Pace students through a simulation of managing a hotel by adding the simulator to your existing curriculum.

- Leverage the goal of increasing a hotel’s sustainability by understanding the connection between environmental, social and governance issues.

- Provide opportunity for students to test the outcomes of different solutions and strategic decisions.

- Incorporate many of today’s global challenges, including:
o Labour rights
o Inclusion
o Staff Engagement
o Community Engagement
o Climate Change
o Water Stewardship
o Waste Management
o Biodiversity

- Progress towards NetPositiveHospitality while managing Financial Performance

- Receive feedback and analysis of student performance, providing them with knowledge and enthusiasm to make NetPositiveHospitality a Reality!

How it Works

Comprising four areas of focus, People, Planet, Place and Prosperity (the 4Ps), learners are tasked with managing a hotel for 7 years, with an aim to progress towards Net Positive, while managing the hotel’s financial performance.

Each game year, learners select initiatives to implement from a list covering different sustainability issues and relating to technical solutions, policy changes and behaviour-based programmes.

After each year of decisions, learners receive feedback on their actions and an analysis of their performance across the 4Ps, giving them the knowledge and enthusiasm to make Net Positive Hospitality a reality.

The hotel is awarded an overall standard, Starting, Advancing, Accelerating, or Leading, in line with the four stages of the Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality.

Faculty will have access to valuable resources to help guide the SIM.

  1. Powerpoint presentation that outlines the program - both a pre-simulator and post simulator brief/debrief
  2. Teaching notes
  3. A Facilitator's Video that outlines the program from the facilitators viewpoint.
  4. A Student Video that will serve to give your students a great overview.

How much time should faculty members allocate?

  • Preparation: 10–15 minutes
  • Simulation play: 90 minutes
  • (possibility to split between different class sessions or split between in-class and out-of-class)
  • Debrief: 20–30 minutes
